La Roux – La Roux

I am not gonna lie. I was actually eagerly anticipating the release/leak of La Roux’s first studio album. Female vocalist Elly Jackson and her counterpart Ben Langmaid, alongside the likes of Little Boots and Lady GaGa have effectively reinvented pop music somewhat in 2009 especially after the internet and subsequent radio release of the immensely popular ‘In for the Kill.’ Various remixes, (including an amazing remix of ‘In for the Kill’ by Skream) of the three released songs (Quicksand and Bulletproof) propelled their buzz and barring an unfortunately timed death by Michael Jackson, probably would’ve seen them score a Number 1 album in the UK.

Tbh, it was exactly how I expected it to be.

The album opens with the aforementioned ‘In for the Kill.’ Nothing needs to be said about that. ‘Tis a tune. That, is followed by the touted-future-number-one-hit ‘Tigerlily’ which is coincidentally the next release destined for radio off the album. Personally, I prefer Bulletproof and In for the Kill, but it’s one of those tunes where you can see why everyone would like it. The album then continues in a samey kind of blend of pop synths and high pitched vocals.

I like it when I listen to an album, and find a new favourite song that has not been released before. ‘Fascination’ is, in my opinion, a hit which would actually do well commercially given the right promotion.

Same with ‘Colourless Colour,’ again, a very well produced hit with seemingly note-perfect vocals and perfectly timed synths. That song is actually a good reflection on the whole album. Seemingly faultless production from getting the vocals perfect to the T and again, seemingly getting the perfect pitch on every note. However, it also just seemed to lack something. Something to give it that oomph. Something majorly stand-outish. Something that I can’t quite put my finger on. I will not link you to ones already released. You’ve probably whored them already. Instead, I shall leave you with another good track off there and an epic remix of Bulletproof by Zinc.

Despite its relatively mediocre star rating, its still worth a buy. If you liked the previous stuff, you’d love the album. If not just wait for the imminent remixes to hit the world of blog.
