Major Lazer – Guns Don’t Kill Poeple … Lazers Do

Where do I start with this one!?

Major Lazer are a relatively new-ish band formed by the dance producer Diplo and London-based electro-don Switch. Judging by the sound of the (amazing) lead single ‘Hold the Line’, I was expecting the album to be awash with loud, powerful electro beats whilst being packed with club and dance hits.

Oh, how I was wrong!

Their refusal to stick to one particular genre makes this album just simply immense. It kicks off with Hold the Line. No introduction needed there! Just a massive electro based tune. You’re then thrusted straight into a blend of exquisitely sampled reggae-based beats only then to be subject to an actually briliant pop-ish song in ‘Keep it Goin’ Louder.’ This genre-defying album is like a Basement Jaxx album on crack; just downright sick.

I was surprised to listen through and realise that the album actually has a mild storyline/concept running throughout involving a fictional one-armed Jamaican military soldier surprisingly called Major Lazer. Tbh, If you dont like electro-influenced, hip-hop mash-ups then I would actually say this album could convert you. The vast amount of features including the likes of Vybz Kartel, Nina Sky and Mr Vegas to name just a few give the whole thing just an undeniable unique edge. Easily one of my top three albums of the year.

Major Lazer – Can’t Stop Now (feat. Mr. Vegas & Jovi Rockwell) listen on zShare
Major Lazer – Keep It Goin’ Louder (feat. Nina Sky & Ricky Blaze) listen on zShare
Major Lazer – When You Hear The Bassline (feat. Ms. Thing) listen on zShare

Also the word on the street is that all the videos will be cartoon-based, Gorillaz style videos which oculd turn out to be very interesting! Seriously, support these two and buy this album. Its wicked.
