BBC Radio 1Xtra DJ Benji B has been announced as the replacement to Mary Anne Hobbs.

In keeping with the tradition of BBC Radio Experimental, his new show will showcase dubstep and experimental electronica.

Benji is acknowledged is renowned for playing cutting edge music from under the radar; as well as playing club nights around the world and running his own club night in London.

Since Radio 1Xtra began broadcasting eight years ago, Benji has presented a weekly show on the station playing the latest and greatest mix of house, hip-hop, dubstep, beats and soulful electronic music.

Benji B said: “I’ve loved every minute of my eight years at 1Xtra and am delighted to be given this incredible opportunity.”

“I can’t wait to bring the essence of my Sunday night show and my loyal audience to my new Radio 1 programme.”

BBC Radio 1 Deputy Controller, Ben Cooper says: “Benji B’s reputation for finding and supporting new cutting-edge music is exemplary, and I’m excited about him being able to put his own mark on the slot.”

With Benji B’s move to Radio 1 there will be also new line-up of programmes on Sunday nights on Radio 1Xtra.

Target’s 100% Homegrown show (currently on Sundays, 7-10pm) moves to 10pm-1am; from 7-8pm there’s a new show – My Top Ten  – with 1Xtra playlisted artists playing their favourite ten tunes each week; from 8-9pm there will be an hour packed full with the best of 1Xtra’s shows from that week; and 9-10pm becomes the new home for Radio 1Xtra’s Stories  – the station’s documentary strand which will explore the musical back story of listeners’ favourite artists, eras, genres and scenes.

Mary Anne Hobbs, after 14 years at Radio 1, has accepted a new job as Media Development Co-ordinator of Forge Media at the University of Sheffield’s Union of Students radio station, TV station and newspaper.

Hobbs bows out on Radio 1 this Thursday with a special mystery guest mix. Benji B’s final Radio 1Xtra show will be on Sunday 10 October and he makes his Radio 1 debut on Thursday 14 October.

After smashing Pro’ Green‘s previous single, ‘Just Be Good To Green’, the duo hailing from Austria were called up again to revamp his brand new single, ‘Monster‘. Camo & Krooked are mainly known for their drum & bass anthems, yet they’ve recently been experimenting with some other hard-hitting sounds, namely dusbstep.

I suppose you could just shrug your shoulders and say ‘Why not? Everyone else’s doing it..’ But one thing that will strike you with this duo is that they know exactly what they’re doing. Packed with driving synth-lines and some dense bass drops, this track is insane.

Here’s the new track from Mr Hudson entitled, ‘Angel Eyes‘. With it’s subdued yet catchy beat, the Birmingham born artist remains confortably in his element. The overall flow is laid back and his vocals are as they should be, delicately effortless.

I really hope Mr Hudson brings back some of his ‘A Tale Of Two Cities’ style. Now don’t get me wrong, I know he’s trying to move forward with his music but I really do miss his old approach. I still can’t get over how incredible the final two tracks on his old album are.

Anyway, I digress. Regarding ‘Angel Eyes’ I have no idea whether it’s going to be on his new album or he’s just leaked it to give his fans a little present. If we find out about any of his upcoming releases we’ll keep you guys up to date.

Earlier I was browsing the iTunes chart (as I often do when everybody else is at Reading) and stumbled across the original of this song. It’s interesting, I haven’t even heard of Stromae before let along the song, yet already I see it sitting comfortably in the iTunes Top 25 chart. The original was quite good, it’s in the style of the popular club songs such as the monster “We No Speak Americano” and Gramophonedzie’s “Why Don’t You” – with the sampled lyrics and repetitive beats. It didn’t seem to offer too much different if I’m honest. It was insanely catchy and insanely danceable. Although with it’s slower, bass filled instrumental it was definitely a drunk anthem.

The remix surprised me though by featuring the monster that is Kanye West. he doesn’t do that much, his flow matches up to the beat quite well and adds another element to the song. It’ll probably make the song more acceptable in America as well. I love Kanye West so obviously I’m going to say it’s better. Well, better when I’m playing it here sat at my computer. In a club I think the original would reign supreme.

Stromae – Alors On Danse (Remix feat. Kanye West & Gilbere Forte)

By now you’ve probably already heard the story of Jakwob‘s sharp rise to fame. His outrageously good remix to Ellie Goulding’s, ‘Under The Sheets’ gave him his first airtime on Radio 1 courtesy of Zane Lowe. As the hype continued to build the producer, born James Jacob had no intention of slowing down. His next colassal remix was strangely enough to another song by Ellie Goulding. This time, however, it was a re-work of ‘Starry Eyed’. If you’ve not already heard it yet, seriously, where have you been for over a year and what’s it like living under a rock?… I think it’s fair enough to say, the track was nothing short of incredible.

Fast forward through 2010 and the producer has not only cemented himself as one of the most higly-anticipated producer’s in the game, but also as one of the most talented. His debut single entitled, ‘Here With Me‘ is set to drop early next month on his own label, ‘Boom Ting Records‘. Although you may not realise it through the works of his remixes, the producer has always stated that he prefered his music to be minimal. The single reflects this aspect rather vividly with Jakwob leading his audience into a dauntingly eerie arena of tormented vocals stretched into an array of impressive instrumentation. If this track is the benchmark for his upcoming releases, i’m not complaining, we’re going to be in for a treat.
